Growing and Sharing Food

UACC’s Food Production & Distribution Program

Through urban gardens centered in low-income housing communities, UACC increases the availability and consumption of fresh, organically grown fruits and vegetables among Charlottesville residents with limited financial means. In partnership with community volunteers and property owners, UACC currently manages over half an acre of vegetable gardens and an expanding community orchard and native plant and pollinator sanctuary. We produce an annual average of 10,000 pounds of fresh produce, all distributed free of charge. The focal point of our work is the Ridge Street Neighborhood of Charlottesville, which includes the low-income housing communities of Crescent Halls, Friendship Court, South 1st Street, and 6th Street.
